my sister’s family sought refuge in a bomb shelter in their home and hid there for 10 hours while the terrorists
were shooting and bombing all around and trying to open the door.
Throughout it all, Roy held the door shut, and my sister calmed the kids, who were hungry and shocked.
At that point, the Hamas attackers set the house on fire in hopes of killing my family inside.
After enduring agonizing hours of sweltering heat, smoke began to seep into their shelter.
In a courageous, split-second decision, my family made a daring, barefoot escape from the window
and miraculously found an Israeli jeep that saved them. As they ran, my nephew asked his mother,
“Ima (mom), is this the end of the world?”
